Description:

The project came as a followup to the colon cancer problematic, as it is diagnosed in about six thousand people per year in Portugal, revealing itself deadly in half the cases.
Colon cancer mostly appears as a degeneration from polyps (small growths, typically benign and with a stalk, protruding from a mucous membrane) which can, if early detected, be safely removed.
This detection makes use of the “Pillcam” medical technology, which has the ability of capture images from the digestive system and transmit them for further analysis.
The developed algorithm isolates regions in endoscopic images that are, presumably, polyps.
